Gardening for Beginners – Six Week Course

A course of 6 classes starting in January 2018, covering all the basics of gardening, learning how to get the most from your garden. Places are limited so booking is essential. This 6 session course costs just €60 including HSHS membership for 2018. Classes will be held in Howth Yacht Club 8:00pm-9:30pm on the following dates, refreshements included:
Wednesday 24th January 2018: The Very Basics – Soils, Compost & Fertilizer
Wednesday 31st January 2018: Your Outside Room – Garden design & layout
Wednesday 21st February 2018: Lawns & Flowers for year-round colour
Wednesday 28th February 2018: Trees, Shrubs, Hedges, Climbers
Wednesday 21st March 2018: The Edible Garden – Fruit and Vegtables
Wednesday 11th April 2018: Greenhouses, Growing Organic, Pests & Diseases, House Plants

AGM followed by Discussion on Showing
8pm Howth Yacht Club
The annual AGM will be followed by “A Discussion on Showing”. There will be a Q&A session on showing plants, flowers & vegetables, crafts & baking, with particular reference to the Howth shows. Interesting & fun with an expert panel!

“Cacti and Other Succulents”
A Talk by Michael Harrington

An introduction to cacti and other succulents
Michael will have plants to sell on the night.
There will be a plant exchange, refreshments and a raffle after the lecture.
Admission for non members/guests is €5.
Members and non members are most welcome to attend and/or exhibit at the annual HSHS Spring Show. There will be a plant sale, book stall, raffle and refreshments for all to enjoy on the day.

Every entry makes a show so don’t be reluctant to have a go this year. One entry or more from every member or visitor will guarantee a super show and there are classes to suit all.

Rowallane Garden, Co. Down
After a wonderful talk by Averil Milligan of Rowallane last year, we are going to visit this beautiful National Trust Garden. Detailed information and directions will be emailed directly to members closer to the time. The Open Gardens are for members and friends, and there is no charge. However as always, there will be a donation bucket for St. Francis Hospice, Raheny in both gardens. All donations will go to the Hospice. Howth & Sutton Horticultural Society is very grateful to our members who are opening their gardens for our pleasure!
