HSHS Spring Show and Plant Sale

Spring Show 2018

Entries are now open for the 2023 Howth and Sutton Horticultural Society Spring Show.  Every entry makes a show and there are classes to suit all.  You do not need to be a member to exhibit, the show is open to all.  Have a look around your garden as there are classes for tulips and daffodils.  If you are a first time exhibitor, there is plenty of help available from our stewards, have a look through the show schedule, and bring your exhibits along on Friday evening from 6pm or Saturday morning before 11am, and you will receive plenty of help to set them up.
Donations for the plant sale and the home baking stall may be dropped to the school from Friday 21st April or the morning of the show.

Return of the Spring Show

HSHS will hold our Annual Spring Show on Saturday April 22nd, our first Spring Show in 4 years!

We will have all your favourites, Plant Sale, Teas, Books, Exhibits, Raffle and a chance to catch up with old friends.

Of course we will be looking for help and also please think about exhibiting!

Donations for the plant stall, cake stall and book stall may be dropped off to the school hall from 4:30pm Friday 21st April

Take a look at the attached schedule, and plan to show off something from your garden.

A schedule of wonderful events for 2021

We have decided to take this year quarter by quarter so all our events for the first quarter will all be online and we hope will keep you entertained during this lock-down. It may be too cold to get out in our gardens but we can still plan and enjoy what is to come.

Spring Show
We will be holding a virtual Spring Show this year, and we will send you all a Show Schedule soon.  You can take a picture of your entry, and we will have them judged.

Plant Sale
We cannot plan for a plant sale during lockdown, and many of us are over-wintering plants from a cancelled Autumn Sale.  It will happen as soon as it is safe to do so, so please do continue to keep plants for us – the Hospice will badly need our donation when it does happen.  If you are planting seeds, maybe plan a few extra for the plant sale!

Lectures and Talks
We have partnered up with our friends in Malahide and Clontarf Horticultural Societies, and that gives us extra events to all enjoy. Here’s a list of what is coming up on Zoom – all at 8pm

Thursday 28 January – from Clontarf Horticultural Society
“Wollerton Old Hall Garden: A Year in the Garden”
Phil Smith, Head Gardener till December 2020 will talk about this modern garden, set in rooms, with echoes of Arts and Crafts.

Spring Show Cancelled

Dear members,

We hope you are all staying safe in these strange times.

In light of the Government guidance issued on the 12th March 2020 to try to bring Coronavirus (COVID-19) under control, we have taken the disappointing but necessary decision to cancel our Spring Show on Saturday 18th April 2020

The decision was made by the committee this week – of course we hope to run the Autumn Show in September, and have that to look forward to.

Our next scheduled event is a day trip in May, and we will let you know nearer to the time if this is to go ahead.

Meanwhile, we are creating our next issue of our ezine, and if you have any articles, photos, thoughts please send them on.  What about your Spring Show entries? – take a photo and send them to us (with a name please) info@hshs.ie

Spring Show 2020

DOWNLOAD SPRING SHOW SCHEDULE 18th APRIL 2020

The HSHS Spring Show will take place on Saturday 18th April in St. Nessans School, Baldoyle and we look forward to receiving your entries in the coming weeks.

A special plea to the home bakers among us.  We are seeking home baked goods for the tea and cake station.  We sold out of cakes very quickly last year and we want to ensure we are well stocked this time round.

As always further plant donations will be greatly appreciated by the plant stall team.  The bigger the variety the better.  Please label plant donations clearly or seek advice if you are unsure.  A brief description and picture is always useful.

Books, cakes and plant donations can be brought along to St Nessan’s School Baldoyle after 4pm on Friday 17th April or as early as possible on the Saturday morning of the show.

Every entry makes a show so don’t be reluctant to have a go this year.

Baldoyle Wood Turners

For those of you who visit our two annual shows, you will have admired the work of Cecil and his group of wood turners who regularly exhibit.  They have a sale every year in Baldoyle Library, all proceeds go to the Altzheimers Society, and it is on this week – every day.

If you are short of a Christmas present, drop into Baldoyle Library any day until the weekend of the 21st December 2019

Happy Christmas, and look forward to another year of gardening in 2020.

A Note from St. Francis Hospice Raheny

On behalf of the patients, staff and volunteers, I would like to thank the members of the Howth and Sutton Horticultural Society for their very generous  donation to our hospice garden. It is much appreciated and will be used wisely. We are putting our thinking hats on about planting something lovely for us all to enjoy for many  seasons ahead.

Your thoughtfulness keeps us all going and the beauty of our garden feeds all our souls.
