Thank you to all who attended the AGM yesterday evening and special thanks to Marie Staunton for her short talk ‘Big Ideas for Small Spaces’ which we all very much enjoyed.
Another year has passed and it’s time to invite you to renew your membership to Howth and Sutton Horticultural Society.
As always, our membership year starts on the 1st of January.
New members are welcome.
For those of you who visit our two annual shows, you will have admired the work of Cecil and his group of wood turners who regularly exhibit. They have a sale every year in Baldoyle Library, all proceeds go to the Altzheimers Society, and it is on this week – every day.
If you are short of a Christmas present, drop into Baldoyle Library any day until the weekend of the 21st December 2019
Happy Christmas, and look forward to another year of gardening in 2020.
Despite the heavy rain last night HSHS members and friends turned out in force for an illustrated talk given by renowned snowdrop expert Assumpta Broomfield. Assumpta opened up the archives and took us on a journey back in time, sharing historical documents and records, oral history and local stories which she has carefully collected and curated over the years. We were introduced to many galanthophiles; men and women who all made significant contributions to horticulture and botanical art in Ireland throughout the centuries, leaving us all looking forward to the snowdrop season ahead. Thank you Assumpta.

We hope you all enjoyed the October lecture given by visiting plantsman Bob Brown last week. Our thanks to Bob for such an entertaining evening and a bumper plant sale.
A reminder about the amended fixture coming up on Wednesday 6th November, 8pm, Howth Yacht Club. We look foward to welcoming the very entertaining horticulturist Assumpta Broomfield – who will talk to us about Irish Snowdrops with a lecture titled “Myth, Magic and Frilly Knickers!”
We will have our usual raffle, refreshments and a Plant Swop, so bring along a plant, and take home something new!
A HSHS member has kindly offered bamboo canes, in packs of 10, all sizes up to 3 meters to anyone who has a use for them.

STOP PRESS from the plant stall team!
More great plants to whet your appetite in addition to the already impressive collection! How about a lovely pale blue Iris ‘Jane Phillips’; a stately Dierama ,or a glowing golden Carex. Make a statement with a bold Leucanthemella, brighten a shaded bed with Pulmonaria ‘June Blake’, bring spring glory to damper spots with a sea of candelabra primulas. Impress your neighbours with a banana, an exotic palm or a black stemmed bamboo – and many more gems. Something of interest for everyone and all at bargain prices! Spread the news! Come along and bring your friends.
Further donations for the plant stall will be appreciated. The bigger the variety of available plants, the better. These can be brought to St Nessan’s School after 4pm. on Friday August 23rd or as early as possible on the morning of the show. Please label clearly or seek advice if you are unsure. A brief description and picture is always useful.
Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday with lots of friends.
Janet and David Jeffrey.
